Why we build homes

Raising a family, working, and playing in Southeast Alaska for over a decade, we have experienced the dramatic changes to our climate, weather, landscape, and communities that is rapidly changing the place we call home.

We want to be a part of the solution to what is quickly becoming a climate crisis. As a builder, I feel I can best make a difference through offering my skill set and experience to help our customers achieve more sustainable homes, that lessen the impact on our resources, locale, and environment as a whole.

Our business model is different than our competitors.

We are a specialized, family owned company, operating primarily in Juneau and Gustavus, Alaska. We focus on design and construction of one or two custom homes per year, advocating for the use of sustainable materials, green building standards and advanced building methods. We strive to keep our overhead and operating costs low, and in doing so pass that savings on to our customers. We don’t want to be the biggest builder, we want to be the ethical builder.

How does our pricing compare.

At Terra, we only build green, and we understand that building a home is expensive. As a result we maximize our customers dollar by direct billing of “Time and Materials” for the project, as well as rebates toward design, sustainable and renewable materials, and green building certification.

We cap our overhead and profit at 5% of the total project costs. This provides more of our customers money to be allocated towards higher levels of sustainable, green building systems and materials. Ultimately saving our customers tens of thousands of dollars on project costs, compared to our larger competitors.
